Bridging the Gap: Bringing new entrants into the landscape industry

Lantra and BALI are working in partnership to understand the barriers to the uptake of apprenticeships by landscaping businesses. Through Lantra’s established research methodology, the project will hear from employers, within the landscaping sector, to understand the barriers as well as informing future solutions. Hear from Wayne Grills, CEO of BALI, and Marcus Potter, CEO of Lantra, talking about the importance of the research and how both organisations are supporting new entrants into the sector.

Green Design Audit: Progress through collaboration

Developed by Nicholsons, the Green Design Audit has already been incorporated into RHS shows, helping to reduce carbon emissions by 28% across two garden categories at this year’s Chelsea. But it could have a wider impact if adopted by the industry. Leading organisations come together to discuss its launch and offer insight into the potential of the audit in reducing our carbon footprint.

BIO

Wayne first joined BALI in 2011. Prior to joining the Association, he followed an early career in the hospitality industry before becoming Chief Executive for a range of awarding bodies/training consultancy companies in a range of industries including Managing Director of the land-based sector’s awarding body, Lantra Awards, in 2006. 

BALI represents a membership of over 1800 companies and individuals in the landscape sector. During his tenure Wayne has been instrumental in raising the association’s profile at both government and industry level. He contributes to key cross-industry working groups and committees, including the Environmental Horticulture Group, various Defra Working Groups, the Plant Health Alliance Steering Group and numerous other industry-led collaborative initiatives. He represents the association on the All Party Parliamentary Gardening and Horticulture Group along with the Scottish Ministerial Industry Roundtable Group and is BALI’s key protagonist for the industry’s skills shortage, overseeing the launch and development of the BALI GoLandscape careers initiative, also ensuring BALI was at the forefront of the employer-led Trailblazer Apprenticeships and has delivered evidence session in parliament on a number of occasions.
