The Changing Face of Quarrying

This presentation will look at how modern technologies and efficiencies have enabled the UK quarrying operation to deliver some of the lowest carbon products available globally. It will ‘myth bust’ some of the preconceptions that people might have about the practice of quarrying and UK quarrying.

BIO

Born in Swanage, Dorset 1967, Marcus is the second son of a Purbeck Limestone Quarrier, with the family link to quarrying from County Durham through to Purbeck stretching back five generations.  Marcus came to the Scottish Borders where his parents had bought a farm some years earlier and started Hutton Stone Co. Ltd. in 1994, cutting masonry and building stone in a disused barn.

The company dealt initially in reclaimed stone and bought slab from other suppliers and in 1999, reopened Swinton Quarry which historically supplied masonry throughout the Borders, North Northumberland and into Edinburgh.

The company now employ 44 staff, operate 3 exclusive quarries and stock a further 20 other UK stone types. They have a turnover of around £3.2 million and have purpose-built production yard/factories in both the Scottish Borders and North Northumberland supplying large and small new build and restoration projects throughout the UK.
