This session will explore the award-winning Elephant Springs project in Elephant & Castle and explore how the use of stone has transformed this city-centre public space.
BIO
Neil Matthew is a Senior Associate at Gillespies and an accomplished designer with strong expertise in urban regeneration. He has led transformative projects of diverse scales across the UK, North America, and China, bringing innovative solutions to complex urban sites. Neil excels in designing sustainable and visually compelling public spaces that cultivate meaningful connections and create vibrant, functional and memorable environments where people can gather, engage, and build lasting memories.
Neil led the public realm design for the major revitalisation of Bracknell Town Centre, now The Lexicon, and designed an elegant public interchange for Paddington Crossrail Station, centred on creating a smoother, more connected and enjoyable transit experience.
Recently, Neil has overseen the design and execution of several phases of Elephant Park, turning Elephant and Castle into one of London’s greenest and most sustainable neighbourhoods. His work includes creating a new community park featuring the standout Elephant Springs water playscape, crafting a detailed landscape masterplan, and implementing a tree retention and planting strategy. His involvement also included the delivery of tree-lined streetscapes, play areas, and courtyards for residential use.
Neil is a member of the Haringey Quality Design Review Panel.
